John Cartwright was born in 1950 in Leeds England, and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1966. A self-taught artist, he has an individualist approach to art.
He experimented extensively to create his own individual style. He developed his own technique of incising the paint surface to give line and form, and when combined with gently washed colours, it produced some strong and unique effects.
His subject matter is predominantly the landscape of the South West of Western Australia with an emphasis on houses, trees and the surrounding bush land.
